WELLNESS CONNECTION · MedicalWhat Are Our Teeth Telling Us? The Link Between Oral Hygiene and Heart Disease.By Roger Thai, DDS, Director of DentistryMay 11, 2011 - 9:00AMThe Journal of the American Dental Association published a study in 2009 that found infective endocarditis, (inflammation of the inner chambers of the heart caused by bacteria) was much more prevalent in patients who have poor dental hygiene. Once in the blood stream, this plaque-causing bacterium can attach itself to the walls of the arteries or to existing arterial plaque and lead to coronary artery disease. When blood flow is constricted, due to plaque buildup in the arteries, the heart must pump harder to move blood though these arteries and blood vessels. What can you do? In between regular visits to the dentist, there are simple steps that each of us can take to greatly decrease the risk of developing tooth decay, gum disease and other dental problems. • Brushing thoroughly twice a day and flossing at least three times a week • Eating a balanced diet and limiting snacks between meals • Using dental products that contain fluoride, including toothpaste • Avoid eating hard food such as candy or chewing on ice It is never too late to take charge of your oral hygiene. Schedule an appointment for an exam and cleaning with your dentist today to help ensure your personal health and longevity. Rated by 1 person: |
