The Fundamentals:  Swedish Massage

While there is some debate around the origin of Swedish massage, there is no question that the experience is sure to provide relaxing benefits. Typically, this soothing style will incorporate long, fluid strokes (effleurage) designed to calm and comfort the individual. Other motions that may be utilized during a Swedish massage are kneading (petrissage), a rhythmic tapping known as tapotement, friction and vibration. Whichever method(s) is selected, based on the client’s needs, the goal is to soothe sore joints and muscles, reducing stress.

Other benefits of Swedish massage include:

• Relax the nervous system
• Improve circulation
• Assist with detoxification
• Provide relief from stiffness, tension and numbness
• Counteract fatigue

What to expect:

• Use of massage oil or lotion to facilitate smooth strokes.
• A draping technique in which the therapist will work on one exposed portion of your body at a time. Most individuals prefer to be nude or lightly clothed under the sheets or towels utilized for draping.
• Light to moderate pressure that you can discuss with your therapist. (If you are looking for firmer and intensive pressure, you may want to consider a Deep Tissue Massage.)
• Some Spa treatments may be contraindicated for certain health conditions. Be prepared to discuss medical concerns with your practitioner.
