The Fundamentals:  Shiatsu

February 21, 2011 - 12:00PM

The modern version of this massage modality was recognized in Japan in the early 1900’s but Shiatsu has roots in traditional Oriental medicine that go back thousands of years. Now widely accepted, Shiatsu practitioners utilize their fingers, hands and sometimes elbows and feet in slow, rhythmic pressure. This therapy commonly combines acupressure, stretching and compression for a soothing treatment.

Other benefits of Shiatsu include:

• Relaxation and assistance with insomnia
• Improve digestive issues and release of toxins from the body
• Alleviate some emotional states such as anxiety, depression or stress
• Provide relief from back, neck and shoulder pain and arthritis

What to expect:

• Wear loose, comfortable clothing; there is no use of oils or lotion.
• Moderate to intense pressure with gentle stretching and manipulation is common.
• This treatment may be done on a low table, mat or massage table.
• Some Spa treatments may be contraindicated for certain health conditions. Be prepared to discuss medical concerns with your practitioner.

Frequently, the after-effects of a Shiatsu massage will include a profound sense of well-being and relaxation. As such, this treatment would be a sensible, and enjoyable, addition to any healthy living plan.
