The Fundamentals:  Reflexology

February 17, 2011 - 5:00PM

Introduced in the U.S. in the early 1900’s by Dr. William Fitzgerald, reflexology was first known as “zone therapy”. The general premise is that each region of the foot or hand correlates to specific glands, organs and other parts of the body. Through manipulation and pressure, the energetic pathways to these areas can be opened, promoting health.

Other benefits of reflexology include:

• Relieve tension headaches or migraines
• Alleviate symptoms of pre-menstrual syndrome
• Improve circulation
• Assist with detoxification
• Diminish sleeplessness
• Ease digestive issues

What to expect:

• Therapy focused on the feet or hands.
• Typically, you will be fully clothed, although barefoot, and either seated or lying down.
• Gentle to firm pressure on particular zones of the feet or hands; manipulation of pressure points and digits.
• Some Spa treatments may be contraindicated for certain health conditions. Be prepared to discuss medical concerns with your practitioner.

Whether you are in need of relaxation and rejuvenation or targeted focus on a specific problem, reflexology can contribute to your overall health and well-being.
