The Fundamentals:  Craniosacral Therapy

February 24, 2011 - 5:00PM

First originated in the early 1900’s by osteopath William G Sutherland, Craniosacral Therapy has largely been championed by Dr. John E. Upledger, D.O., O.M.M. for the past several decades. Practiced by osteopaths, chiropractors and qualified spa therapists, this treatment evaluates the craniosacral rhythm and increases the natural circulation of fluids through the nervous system. Unique to craniosacral bodywork is the very gentle pressure utilized: the equivalent of the weight of a nickel, no greater than 5 grams.

Benefits of Craniosacral Therapy include:

• Deep state of relaxation
• Improvement with conditions such as TMJ (Temporomandibular Joint Syndrome) and Migraines
• Ease emotional or stress related problems
• Provide relief from back, neck and shoulder pain and other chronic pain disorders

What to expect:

• Wear loose, comfortable clothing.
• A supine (face-up), relaxed positioning is most common with some seated placement, dependent on therapeutic necessity.
• Extremely light touch and gentle manipulation of the connective tissue around the central nervous system.
• Some Spa treatments may be contraindicated for certain health conditions. Be prepared to discuss medical concerns with your practitioner.

This hands-on therapy can be deeply relaxing and provide some surprising benefits. Although far different than a traditional massage, Craniosacral Therapy is a powerful yet gentle experience, well worth having.
