WELLNESS CONNECTION · Life BalanceSeize The Day!January 02, 2012 - 12:00PMFor those of us that seize the opportunity of the New Year to make resolutions designed to guide us in our pursuit of our better selves, it's time to pay attention. In order for these resolutions to succeed, we must first correlate them to our values. But what does this mean? Well, let's look at an example: Resolution: "Join a gym and lose 15 pounds." We can all agree that this is a fairly typical resolution. The details may vary, but as fitness clubs around the country will attest, memberships boom in the month of January. So what are the values that are driving us to the gym? It can be very different for each of us, but once we recognize what our personal motivations and underlying values are, the resolutions get a lot easier to stick to! Here's a few examples: Family - Perhaps there are children at home that we want to "keep up with" or grandchildren we want to watch grow and flourish for years to come. Maybe a spouse or partner likes bike riding, surfing or running and we want to be more fit in order to be active together. The joy of shared time with our loved ones is quite powerful. Appearance - While this may seem frivolous, we live in a very image-conscious society and our appearance can be a great motivator. Overall Health - For some of us, health concerns can lead to a direct desire to get in better shape. Perhaps a recent physical has shown us an underlying issue that forces us to face our own poor choices and resultant health concerns. This can be a very personal value and very impactful. To help us, journaling can be a great kick start as simply writing our goals and values gives them power. In addition, we provide ourselves with a record so that we may "check in" and ensure that our energy is being directed in the right areas throughout the year. One important note here is that over time, our priorities can change. We need to be lenient with ourselves if shifting priorities have caused us to lose focus on our original resolutions. Whatever our plans are for 2012, let's commit to keeping our mental outlook positive, our focus on personal values and dreams, and remember, small, manageable steps are the most sustainable in the long run.
