Extreme Makeover: Weight Loss Edition, Highlights Condition: Sleep Apnea

One serious health problem experienced by some of the participants in Extreme Makeover: Weight Loss Edition, and by many other super-obese individuals is sleep apnea. According to Dr. Daniel Norman, Diplomat of the American Board of Sleep Medicine and one of the Sleep Specialists at the Institute, “While people who are of normal body weight can also suffer from sleep apnea, obesity increases the risk of this disorder significantly.”

Dr. Norman recommends, “When beginning a weight loss program, people should keep in mind that getting enough hours of sleep should be an important part of the process.” He cautions that “people who are sleep-deprived are not only often ‘too tired’ to exercise, but also experience hormonal changes that affect their metabolism, making it more likely that they will gain weight over time.”

Typical recommendations are between 7 - 8 hours per night, which sleep apnea can greatly affect through repeated breathing interruptions.
