Set your kitchen timer for 20 minutes when you feel the urge to eat (but shouldn’t) to delay that impulse. Putting it off helps build tolerance to emotional impulse eating. Studies show that people who delay the onset by 20 minutes can decrease inappropriate eating by 85%! 2. How do you tell the difference between emotional and habitual eating? Do a mental check: emotional eating is preceded by negative feeling like sadness or frustration; habitual eating doesn’t matter – you will tend to want to eat all the time. Often times, even when an emotional crisis has passed, a habitual eating pattern will develop. 3. If you have made up your mind to lose weight, but can’t seem to make progress, seek professional help. Often an underlying issue needs to be addressed (depression or anxiety) in order to ensure lasting life change and successful behaviors. Medical Hypnotherapy can very effective in reinforcing positive change and promoting healthy behaviors as well. Remember, lasting change is a series of steps in the right direction over time. Build your support network and make some small commitments to get started on a healthier path. The Registered Dietitians at the Institute are available for one-on-one consultations and Wellness Kitchen classes can help you recognize how to transform some of your favorite comfort foods into nutritionally balanced, healthy eating.
