Extreme Makeover: Weight Loss Edition Behavior Tips: Battling Sugar

June 07, 2011 - 5:00PM

In the premiere episode of Extreme Makeover: Weight Loss Edition, we got a peak into some of the struggles that Rachel, the formerly 369 pound Physical Education teacher, faced with her diet. Director of Nutrition, Paulette Lambert, also helped Rachel with her true dietary demon: sugar. Paulette shares some of the top tips to battle the dietary behavior of sugar dependence:

1. If sugar is one of your triggers, cut it clean out of your diet for 2 weeks. This will give your body time to detox, return to its natural balance and helps you gain control over your cravings to set you up for successful behaviors long-term.

2. Be aware of all the places that sugar hides: beverages (the obvious culprit is soda but many beverages, such as flavored iced teas and alcohol, have high sugar contents as well), processed foods, cereals, condiments and yogurt.

3. Prepare your own food; don’t depend on others to maintain your diet for you. Be assertive about meeting your dietary needs.

Sugar is a battle for many people so don’t feel alone! In fact, the average American consumes more than 152 pounds of sugar each year. If you find yourself struggling, visit the Institute for a healthy cooking class in the Wellness Kitchen or see one of our Registered Dietitians in a one-on-one consultation.
