WELLNESS CONNECTION · MedicalExtreme Makeover: Weight Loss Edition Highlights Plantar FasciitisMay 30, 2011 - 7:00PM![]() According to Dr. Steven Tan, Director of Complementary and Alternative Medicine at the Institute, “plantar fasciitis is a common cause of foot and heel pain in active people who engage in exercises that are repetitive or that strain the tissue near the heel.” The plantar fascia runs along the bottom of your foot, a thick band of tissue connecting the heel bones and the toes. Under normal conditions, this part of the foot helps absorb the impact the foot undergoes as it hits the ground during walking, running or, to a lesser extent, bicycling. When the plantar fascia is inflamed, often through over-usage, the result can be pain, usually a sharp, stabbing sensation in the heel. This pain can be severe enough to prevent further exercise and sometimes even normal walking. A previous injury, over-exercise and even normal exercise in people who are overweight can predispose you to this condition. If you are starting an exercise program and have any of these predisposing factors, get advice from your doctor before exercising. If you have pain with exercise, seek treatment, as continued exercise only makes the problem worse. Dr. Tan shares, “ways to treat it here [at the Institute] include acupuncture to reduce local inflammation and speed up healing and supervision with our fitness experts who can show ways of training that minimize injury to the heel.” For more information on Personal Training or Acupuncture, call (818) 575-1114 or e-mail (JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address).
