Often I hear, “I want to eat healthfully, but I don’t cook.” The reasons vary, but lack of cooking skill, lack of time, and lack of interest generally top the list. Most of us recognize, often by our expanding waistlines, that not cooking isn’t exactly the healthiest way to go. Whether we’re replacing home-cooked meals with a frozen entrée and a bag of chips or with a large portion of restaurant food with added fat and a basket of bread, not cooking can make healthy eating a bit more challenging. . . more

Weight Loss After 40

Good-bye, estrogen; hello, body fat! Ask any woman over 40 years of age and most will agree: it’s just not like it used to be when it comes to managing weight. About 90 percent of perimenopausal and menopausal women experience some weight gain, averaging 12 to 15 pounds between the ages of 45 and 55. Weight gain after 40 is associated with increased amounts of fat around the midsection, frequently resulting in increased breast size as well. A major concern for all women who face weight gain during this period is the risk of chronic disease—including cancer, heart disease, diabetes, and stroke—which increases dramatically with weight gain.

In the second and third episodes of Extreme Makeover: Weight Loss Edition, we were able to see a consistent nutrition obstacle for both Alex, a 23-year-old with aspirations to be a sports agent (in a Hugo Boss suit!), and Dana, a middle-aged singer from Tennessee. Director of Nutrition, Paulette Lambert, helped Alex and Dana recognize that this major crutch was the addiction to soda and sugar drinks. While Alex in particular did not consume large quantities of food, he would drink up to 2,000 calories a day of orange juice and soda. Mindful Eating and the Joy of the Holidays

Here come the holidays! They are a time for family, celebrations and, of course, eating. In an environment that has holiday treats in abundance, does it mean that we have to succumb to the dreaded weight gain? Is there a way to enjoy delicious foods and not gain those five pounds? You do have a choice. You can enjoy the holidays and avoid gaining weight if you practice mindful eating. This is more than just watching what you eat. Mindful eating is being more aware of how, when, and why you eat, not just what you eat. Yes, the holiday celebrations are laden with special foods that lead many of us to use the excuse "it's only once a year." The reality, however, is that most of us can have whatever we want any time of the year. Remind yourself there will be another holiday soon (Valentine's Day, for one).
